On Day 1 day of racing at the Trofeo SAR Princess Sophia Regatta in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, MYC's Erik Bowers posted finishes of 20,13 respectively in a 15-20mph westerly with 4' seas. He stands in 42nd overall, 17 points behind Charlie Buckingham for the highly-coveted top American sailor spot in the Laser class. According to Erik, "The qualifying series competition ends Tuesday, one day sooner than normal. We then split into Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets for three more days of racing. Tuesday is crunch time. I need two excellent races to be able to throw out my 20th and stay in the Gold Fleet hunt." Bowers continued, "The race committee set long starting lines today. My prestart was good but I needed to start closer to the ends to better judge time and distance to the start." Racing resumes Tuesday, March 29. The Trofeo SAR Princess Sofia Regatta is the second and final selection event for the U.S. Sailing Olympic Team in the Laser class.
