First Racing Recap of 2020 - July 4th & 5th

Let's hear it for the first official race weekend at the Minnetonka Yacht Club for the 2020 season! It was hot. It was muggy. There was no wind on Saturday, July 4th...BUT the Race Committee did end up getting one race off on Sunday, July 5 with a total of 24 boats on the lake. And yes, Blake did his fabulous musical parade on the signal boat, bringing the red, white and blue spirit to all of us starting at 8AM on Saturday morning.

Make sure to give a big shout out to the X fleet with the largest number of participants our first weekend of racing, SEVEN awesome youth racers! It was great to hear Kate Ness was back sailing this weekend after a hand injury midway through last season, welcome back Kate! Additionally we had a ton of siblings competing again one another for a bit of sibling (and cousin) rivalry to spice up the race as well. Nicely done (in no particular order) Peter Jewett, Lauren Strothman, Alex Strothman, Connor Jewett, Kate Ness, Jimmy Hughes, Martha Hughes making your way around the course!

Mark Bury represented the Open Fleet and Peter Wattson represented the C Fleet (or was that Skip Dickel as they often crew/skipper together!?), both boats getting first and last place in their respective fleets.

Be sure to congratulate Charlie Hurd on his new Yngling this season, upgrading from Frieda Sail to Oma's Fancy. It must be that slick new hull that helped him finish ahead of Bolt Moore skippering Sailbolt, notorious for it's perfect length tiller...an axe handle!

Fun was had amongst the regulars in the E Fleet as well with Tom Burton, Jason Ostbye, Rob Evans, Jeff Solum, Judson Koehn, and the youngsters Max Sigel and Graham Ness (one year of college under his belt, but he's still a youngster to me) on the scene coming in hot! Watch out for these rising sailors folks!

The MC Fleet had 6 strong contenders for the first race of the season with both Clint and George Kennedy racing against each other (father versus son) as well as Stephen Lang, Jon Lang, Ben O'Laughlin and Hendrik Vroege battling it out. Welcoming George into the MC Fleet this season, moving over from Furious George in the E Fleet (just for the season!), the rest of the seasoned MC-ers saw Hendrik Vroege win the first race this year (after finishing the 2019 season winning the Champ series).

Monday night youth races were a success on July 6th for Lasers, 420s, and Optis, so be on the look out for more results coming soon!
