History

The very first Inter-Lake races were sailed as a result of a challenge issued by White Bear Yacht Club to The Minnetonka Yacht Club.  In the 1961 book History of the White Bear Yacht Club, Carl B.  Drake states, “In 1892, an Interlake series of races was sailed between the Minnetonka Yacht Club champion, the Dolphin, and the Shark of the White Bear Yacht Club.  The winner is not recorded… On May 13, 1895, an agreement was made between the Minnetonka Yacht Club and the White Bear Yacht Club to sail a series of races each season for three years between representatives in the 23-foot sloop and cat classes.”

As the book The Minnetonka Story relates, for the first Inter-Lake in 1895, Minnetonka sailboats were loaded onto wagons and pulled by teams of horses to White Bear Lake a day early to practice for the regatta.  White Bear won every event.  In 1896, the second year, White Bear and Minnetonka tied for honors.  Then, in 1897, again at White Bear, WBYC won all of the races.  The Inter-Lake Regatta tradition was born during these first years of racing.  The purpose of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association became to foster the concept of team sailing between member clubs.

Today, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association includes the Calhoun Yacht Club, the Clear Lake Yacht Club (Iowa), the Lake Harriet Yacht Club, the Minnetonka Yacht Club, the Missouri Yacht Club, the Okoboji Yacht Club (Iowa), the Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club, and the White Bear Yacht Club.  The Inter-Lake Regatta was traditionally an invitational regatta, open only to the top yachts from each of the member clubs.  However, we now invite all members to participate, but only the top skippers who must pre-qualify at their home lake are scored for the Team Challenges.

Over 125 years has passed since the first Inter-Lake challenge was issued by WBYC.  The boats, now made of fiberglass, aluminum and carbon fiber, have changed considerably but the regatta, based on team and individual accomplishment, retains a strong “family” atmosphere combined with the enjoyment of competitive sailing.
